If you’ve been curious whether dental implants are an option, you’re in good company. Dental implants can be a life-changing solution for anyone missing teeth, and at Citracado Dental Group, we’re thrilled to offer this transformative treatment.
To help answer some of the most common questions about dental implants, we turn to our very own Dr. Robert Jungman. With his passion for dentistry and extensive experience, Dr. Jungman explains what makes someone a good candidate for dental implants and what to expect throughout the process.
What Are Dental Implants?
At our practice, we see firsthand how dental implants can restore not just smiles but confidence and quality of life.
In his segment with “Healthy Smiles, Healthy Lives,” Dr. Jungman explains. “Well, I am sure that most people have heard of dental implants as a replacement for teeth, but what they may not know is that we use them in many different ways to help our patients. Essentially, they are artificial replacements for the roots of teeth that get removed. Typically made from titanium or zirconia, they act as a foundation to build a new tooth or teeth, or to provide anchorage for dentures.”
This solid foundation makes implants a durable and versatile option for restoring both the appearance and functionality of your smile.
Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?
One of the first questions we hear from patients is, “Am I a candidate for dental implants?” Dr. Jungman provides insight into what makes a great candidate:
“Dental implants are a fantastic option for replacing missing teeth because they can look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The ideal candidate for dental implants is someone who has one or more missing teeth, good overall health, and sufficient bone density in the jaw to support the implant. However, even if someone doesn’t have enough bone, there are techniques like bone grafting to gain more space, or we can use alternative implant sites.”
Even if you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone, don’t lose hope — there are often options to make implants a reality for you.
Why Overall Health Matters
We love helping our patients achieve healthier smiles, but as Dr. Jungman explains, overall health plays a big role in the success of dental implants:
“Overall health is actually very important. Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, or certain autoimmune disorders can impact the healing process. For example, patients in poor general health may face a higher risk of implant failure. There are also certain medications that can increase the risk of serious side effects from the dental implant process.”
If you’re managing health conditions or taking medications, our team will work closely with you to create a safe, effective treatment plan that fits your unique needs.
Is Age a Factor?
Another common concern is whether age limits someone’s ability to receive dental implants. Dr. Jungman has great news for patients:
“There isn’t a strict age limit for dental implants. The key factor is the maturity of the jawbone. For younger patients, we usually wait until the jawbone has fully developed, which is typically in their late teens or early twenties. For older patients, age itself isn’t a barrier as long as they’re in good health and have sufficient bone density. We have patients well into their 80s who are still successfully receiving dental implants!”
Whether you’re in your twenties or your eighties, dental implants could still be an option for you.
What’s the Next Step?
If you’re considering dental implants, the first step is sitting down with a trusted dentist to discuss your goals and explore your options. Dr. Jungman explains:
“The first step is to schedule a consultation with a dentist who can create a treatment plan that matches their goals. Finding a trusted provider who can take the time to listen to the patient’s needs is important to make sure the overall plan makes sense for them. There are so many options when it comes to implant therapy, from a single tooth replacement to anchoring an entire set of teeth. Some implant centers, for example, may only offer one type of treatment plan. Discussing all the alternatives and pros and cons, and creating a treatment plan specific to you is important before starting the dental implant journey.”
At Citracado Dental Group, we take pride in creating personalized treatment plans that prioritize your comfort, health, and long-term success.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
Dental implants are about more than restoring your smile — they improve your ability to eat, speak, and enjoy your quality of life more. They’re a long-term investment in oral health, and they can last for decades with proper care.
