Five ways to celebrate World Oral Health Day on March 20

Citracado Dental Group • March 13, 2023

March 20 is World Oral Health Day – an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of proper oral health care around the world.

Poor oral health can cause serious issues such as pain, infection and tooth loss, which can lead to complications with eating, speaking, learning and socializing. However, by taking small preventive measures and visiting the dentist regularly, we can protect our teeth and gums for life.

Everyone has the right to access quality oral health care – World Oral Health Day is about working together to make it happen!

Here are five ways to celebrate World Oral Health Day.

Educate Your Kids

Taking your kids to the dentist, brushing their teeth and explaining why it is important can help foster healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Regular visits to the dentist are also essential for checking for any potential problems and making sure that teeth are developing correctly. If possible, it is best to start taking your child to the dentist from an early age to familiarize him or her with the experience. This helps make future dental visits easier, reduces anxiety and fosters lifelong preventive care practices.

Good oral health isn't just about clean teeth – it is also about teaching children healthy lifestyle habits such as reducing sugary snacks, avoiding smoking and staying hydrated with water throughout the day. Teaching your children these basics of maintaining good oral health while they are still young can set them up for success in adulthood by helping protect their teeth and gums from decay and disease.

Give Up Smoking

While this may sound hard for some, it is a worthy goal to try to achieve. Quitting smoking has immense benefits to our oral health. Tobacco use is the foremost preventable cause of oral disease and is one of the leading causes of death globally. Cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals and compounds, many of which can cause staining, bad breath, gum inflammation, reduced sense of taste and smell, tooth decay and an increased risk of oral cancer.

By quitting smoking, people can reduce risks associated with oral health problems such as tooth discoloration, periodontal disease and other forms of tissue damage. Quitting also helps improve overall general health and can reduce stress levels.

Quitting smoking has many positive effects on our oral health – there is simply no downside! Taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle not only helps protect your teeth now but will benefit you for years to come.

Eat Less Sugar

Sugary foods and drinks are the primary sources of tooth decay and can cause cavities if they are not removed from the surfaces of your teeth in a timely fashion. High sugar levels in your body also increase the chances of developing gum disease, plaque buildup, bad breath and staining.

It is best to replace sugary snacks with healthy options such as fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, dairy products and lean proteins.

While reducing intake of added sugars is important, it’s also essential to brush your teeth regularly using toothpaste and flossing daily; these habits help remove any residual sugar that remains on the surface of your teeth after meals or snacks.

Eating less sugar can help keep our teeth healthy – it's a win-win!

Brush and Floss Twice Daily

Brushing and flossing our teeth twice per day is one of the most important things we can do for our oral health.

Regular brushing helps reduce risks associated with tooth decay and gum disease as it removes sugar particles that cause cavities and decreases bad breath caused by bacteria buildup. Flossing, meanwhile, keeps gums healthy by removing food particles before they become lodged in the crevices of your teeth or start to build up around the gums.

Both brushing and flossing should be done twice daily (ideally after meals). Additionally, regular visits to the dentist are important for catching any potential issues before they become too serious – this is especially true if you’re experiencing discomfort when brushing or flossing.

Brushing and flossing our teeth twice per day is essential for keeping our mouths free from harmful bacteria, reducing plaque buildup, preventing cavities and maintaining the good overall health of our teeth and gums.
