Keeping your kids happy and healthy until their next visit can be a breeze by remembering the number “two”! That means brushing two minutes, twice per day to keep teeth and gums healthy. This good habit will create a foundation for whole-mouth health: healthy teeth and gums, fresh breath and fewer cavities.
Children under the age of three, or as soon as their little teeth begin to sprout, should practice this habit, as recommended by the Partnership For Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives campaign. A very small amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used.
The same guidance should be followed by children between the ages of three and six. A slight difference is they should use slightly more toothpaste; a pea-sized amount will do.
To set children up for success, provide them with a soft-head toothbrush. Letting them pick out their own color can add some fun to the routine. Their brush should be sized small enough to allow full brush movement inside the mouth. Encourage children to reach for every little corner and instruct them not to swallow toothpaste.
As a reminder, children’s toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months or sooner if wear and tear are noticeable on the bristles. If your child comes down with a bug, that’s also a great time to replace the toothbrush.
As parents ourselves, we understand how important your child’s health is. Your family’s oral health is our top priority and we are committed to providing guidance on important health issues through early dental education.
