If you suffer from consistent pain deep in your muscles, you may have Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). It’s typically caused by inflammation, triggering pain, and tight muscle knots.
The pain originates from the fascia, the connective tissue over the muscle. It’s also what the syndrome is named after. You can feel discomfort in one muscle or multiple muscle areas.
Unfortunately, if you’re diagnosed with the syndrome, it’s likely you’ll experience increased pain.
For many, a deep pain within the muscles is a sign of possible myofascial pain syndrome. The pain will occur in the neck, shoulder, and upper or lower parts of the back.
Some patients describe the pain as both a knot and spasm, occurring during the day and nighttime hours. It can also affect sleep. Swelling and a warming sensation are also common.
What causes myofascial pain syndrome?
Repetitive motions and overuse of certain muscles are possible causes. As you overuse your muscles, trigger points within the muscle will lead to improper blood flow.
MPS can be contained to a specific area, but it can also radiate to other parts of the body.
The Connection to TMJ
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) is a disorder of the jaw and its joints and muscles. Because MPD and TMJ can both affect the jaw, they are often connected. Both issues can result from repetitive motions.
If you experience clicking or locking of the jaw, possibly accompanied by an earache, you may be experiencing a TMJ issue. Mostly, it may feel like your bite isn’t quite right and that the teeth in the back aren’t closing or connecting like they had before. The pain typically occurs during meals or at night.
If you’re experiencing such symptoms, make sure you contact us. Our treatment for overworked jaw muscles includes bite guards, physical therapy, medication, and relaxation strategies.
